Canon has announced the upgrade of its professional EOS 1D reflex: 1D Mark IV.
Main news on this model:
- new autofocus system with 45 AF points (the competition with Nikon is stiff...) of which 39 are high-precision, and new Auto Focus predictive algorithm;
- 10 frames per second burst, optimal for sport photography;
- HD video recording up to 1080x720 pixels at 29.97 fps with monoaural built-in microphone or external stereo one;
- 16 megapixels sensor of APS-H size, that means a crop factor of 1.3 (focals are multiplied by 1.3);
- ISO up to 12'800 - even up to 102'400 with expansion..., that we do not recommend since images loose detail and contrast, but Nikon with recent D3s made the same...;
- declared better white balance with tungsten light, where Canon white balance has always been poor.
The new model should be available by end of this year at about $ 5'000.

Canon has announced two new Wireless File Transmitters - WFT:
- the WFT-E4 II, a new version of the wired/wireless transmitter for the 5D Mark II that includes support for 802.11a wireless networks (besides 802.11b/g) and WFT server that takes advantage of Java enabled browers to easily control camera settings.

Nikon has announced an upgrade to its professional D3 DSLR model: the D3s.
The hardware is basically the same except for a new sensor for achieving extremely high sensitivity. Let's see the major differences.
- Luckily, no pixel increase (mega pixel race is often considered as quality race....), but impressive ISO range: base range is 200-12,800 and expanded up to 102,400.... this value sounds like a mistake, but it is correct. Hoping to see soon the noise at this extremely high sensitivity.
- Video capture where competition with Canon is particulary though: 1,280 x 720 pixels at 24 frames per second in Motion JPEG AVI format (with in camera basic editing). Also a mono microphone is introduced for sound recording and a connector for an external stereo mic (very useful).
- A new Quiet Shutter Release mode is introduced and a dedicated live view button.
The new Nikon D3s should be available by end of November for about $ 5,200.

Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith, inventors of the CCD imaging sensor widely used in digital cameras (the other type is CMOS sensor), have received this year's Nobel Prize for Physics.
Also the first experimenter of fibre optics (Charles K. Kao) has been given the Physics Nobel.

The interesting Mogrify plugin for Lightroom2 has been updated to version 4.11 (some bugfixes and some new features).
Mogrify add watermarks, sophisticated borders and so on when exporting photos from Lightroom 2.

Canon will not participate in the next annual PMA trade showthat will be held in California (Anaheim) next February 2010.
This is quite surprising since Canon has always had quite a large exhibit there, also with many company senior representative showing up. Most probably costs cuts.
Canon also confirmed to participate in the CES fair in Las Vegas (Nevada) on January 2010, an event that has a more general target audience (electronics more than photography-focus of PMA).
